Dental crowns are necessary when a child has severely decayed or damaged teeth from dental trauma. When a tooth needs too much of the structure to be removed to be a good candidate for a filling, a dental crown will be placed instead for increased strength and durability. It is important to preserve the health of your child’s teeth, even when they’re baby teeth.
Losing a tooth prematurely can cause many issues such as shifting teeth that prevent the permanent teeth from erupting properly. Dental crowns from our San Diego practice protect your child’s teeth and make it easier to chew their food with a strong tooth that restores its structure.

Stainless Steel, Zirconia, & Ceramic White Crowns
We offer stainless steel crowns, zirconia, and white (ceramic) crowns at our San Diego pediatric dental office.
Stainless Steel - Stainless steel crowns are still the gold standard in pediatric dentistry. They offer superior strength and durability, lasting for many years. However, they are noticeably silver in appearance which doesn’t make them ideal for teeth located in the front of the mouth. Typically this is not a big deal as the deciduous tooth will fall out anyway, though children with damaged or decayed permanent teeth may not want a silver crown. They are very affordable, and are often used for baby teeth, since the crown will protect the tooth until it falls out naturally.
Zirconia - Zirconia is a superior ceramic material, matching the durability and strength of stainless steel. They are more aesthetically pleasing due to their opaque white color. However, they are more expensive and require more removal of the tooth’s structure. These crowns are better suited for teeth located in the front of the mouth and permanent teeth.
White - Ceramic white crowns are extremely natural-looking and blend in with the rest of the teeth seamlessly. However, these crowns are the least durable and are prone to chipping, cracking, and becoming worn down. These crowns are not recommended for placement in the rear molars which withstand forces from chewing and teeth grinding. Since the ceramic color can be matched to your child’s teeth, they offer superior cosmetic results. This is why they are a better option for older children who have a damaged permanent tooth.

Signs Your Child Needs A Crown
If your child has a toothache or a sensitive tooth, they may have a deep cavity that may require treatment with a crown. Other signs of decay to look out for include gum inflammation near the tooth and visible pitting, holes, or black/brown staining on the surface of the tooth.
Crowns may also be needed if your child’s tooth has been damaged by an oral injury like a slip and fall, or a hard hit in a contact sport. If your child’s tooth looks cracked, chipped, or broken, it’s best to see Dr. Wendy for a consultation in San Diego. Their tooth will need to be restored to keep it strong, and prevent further complications.

Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns help restore the natural appearance and function of your child’s smile after they’ve had one of their teeth damaged, so they can eat, speak, and smile with confidence once again.
Dental crowns also help prevent future complications, covering the tooth all the way down to the gum line and protecting it from decay.
Crowns will also save you time and money. If you don’t get a crown for your child’s tooth when they need one, they may need a more complex and expensive treatment, like a root canal, or their tooth may end up requiring extraction. By getting the care your child needs right away, you can avoid these procedures and their related expenses.

The Crown Placement Process
The process of dental crown placement differs slightly, based on whether you choose a stainless steel or ceramic crown. However, it always begins the same way. Dr. Wendy will clean and numb your child’s mouth. Then, she will use a dental drill to remove any decayed or damaged tooth material to reshape your child’s tooth.
If your child is getting a stainless steel crown, Dr. Wendy will choose a pre-fitted crown that will fit perfectly onto their treated tooth. Then, it will be bonded in place permanently, completing the procedure.
For a ceramic crown, Dr. Wendy will use dental putty and trays to take an impression of your child’s teeth. This is sent to a dental lab, where their permanent crown will be made. Dr. Wendy will attach a temporary resin crown to your child’s tooth, and send you home.
Then, you’ll come back to our San Diego office in 2-3 weeks when your child’s permanent crown has been built. Dr. Wendy will remove your child’s temporary crown, check their permanent crown to ensure that it fits perfectly, then bond it in place permanently, restoring their smile.
